Here's what he said.

“The decision to play at all costs was mine. The Azzurri staff did everything possible and nothing was underestimated,” assured the hitman.

“I don't know how long I'll be out for, but I think around a month.”

Olympics: Rocchi takes the blame

Tommaso Rocchi responded to Lazio patron Claudio Lotito's accusations by insisting his Olympic injury was purely his fault.

“The decision to play at all costs was mine. The Azzurri staff did everything possible and nothing was underestimated,” assured the hitman.

“I don't know how long I'll be out for, but I think around a month.”

The veteran striker - Italy's only over-age player in Beijing - is on his way back from China after x-rays showed he played despite sustaining a fracture.

Lazio President Lotito accused the Italy medical staff of incompetence in assuming it was a muscular problem and allowing him to play.

“It was such a huge disappointment,” said Rocchi as he was replaced by official reserve Antonio Candreva.

“I hoped it wouldn't happen in such a special competition, one which I will never again be able to participate in during my career.

“I tried to hold back the tears, but then crumbled after the staff and all my teammates hugged me. Now I will cheer them on.”
Rocchi sustained the fracture in a training session before the debut with Honduras, but was able to play and score a goal in the second match with South Korea.

“I am sad and angry about this injury, but it was my choice to play that game. I wanted to play at all costs, just like I do at club level.”

Such a shame!

I was just about to post that article Gio! Very Happy

yes, the time out depends on the kind of fracture, it normally takes 6 weeks to heal but some will only take 4 weeks, some will take a lot longer. as the Italia medical team didn't seem too worried about the injury and seen as Rocchi felt he could play on it, I would say another 4-6 weeks would be all he's out for.

Rocchi Suffers Fibula Fracture
Lazio striker Tommaso Rocchi will be out for at least 40 days after checks revealed he has fractured his fibula during the Olympics.

It seems that the injury occurred to Tommaso Rocchi at the Olympics is worse than expected. Checks made today revealed that the Lazio striker has fractured his fibula, which will no doubt infuriate president Claudio Lotito, who already resisted the player's call-up to the Olympics.

"This pathology means that the player will have to be subjected to a specific rehabilitation programme and physiotherapy before more exams are made by the first few days of September. The diagnosis is of about 40 days if there aren't any more complications," it says on a note on Lazio's official website.

This is bad news for coach Delio Rossi, who will not be able to count on the prolific striker for the delicate first few matches of the Serie A season, which kicks off on 30 August.

The 30-year-old joined Lazio from Empoli in 2004 and has scored 59 goals in 144 appearences since then, forming a lethal couple with Goran Pandev up front. He's also made three appearences for Italy, without finding the net, but he did score against South Korea during the Olympic team's second group game.

That's great but will Ledesma be captain if Siviglia doesn't play?? Seems a bit stupid considering. Rocchi is a good choice though.

It's more like that Siviglia will be captain when Ledesma doesn't play. Ledesma is second and siviglia third.

looks like goran prefers the right and rocchi the left, that's where the were featured most if i remember correctly. maybe it's to wrong foot defenders.

Its probably more to be able to break in and go for goal rather than sending crosses etc...

Are we getting any money from the Lega or the football association seeing as how he got injured in the Olympics?

Any compensation for this?

Tommaso was in the hospital today for a full check.
The bone is doing fine and he will start tomorrow to pump up the volume with the leg muscles.
He would like to come back for Milan game but he will know that only next Friday if he will be able or not to play at least half time.

ROCCHI – DE SILVESTRI, GOOD NEWS

Good news at casa Lazio. Tommaso Rocchi today underwent clinical investigations, and he has shown improvements. For De Silvestri the muscle injury is over. Meanwhile, Delio Rossi has started working with the group in Formello.
ROCCHI – The centre forward who got injured at the Olympics is improving. The examinations have shown consolidation of the fracture on the right leg. The player will continue with physiotherapy, but also begin work in the water to return the muscle tone. The next appointment is scheduled within 15 days.
DE SILVESTRI – The defender had an MRI scan and it revealed his muscle problem has nearly healed up. The player will carry on with physiotherapy treatments, but will soon begin to work on the field.
THE GROUP – Meanwhile, today the boys of Delio Rossi returned to train. They carried out a double working session, and will do the same for tomorrow. Carrizo, Rozehnal, Lichtsteiner, Radu and Pandev are all absent with their national teams. The players out of the main group trained on a different pitch, among them there is now Belleri also.

I just hope he doesnt rush it, but that he lets it take the time needed for full recovery. We need Rocchi during a long time and the worst thing would be seeing him do a fairly quick rehabilitation and then suffer an injury again. Take your time Tommy!

Rocchi soon back

SS Lazio comunicates that Tommaso Rocchi will return to full training with the group next week. This should mean that the attacker will be ready for a comeback in the end of September.

In other injury news, Rozehnal missed todays session, but should be ok for Milan. Pasquale Foggia and Ousmane Dabo are still in doubt, while Del Nero and Firmani are still on the injury list.
