After a 0-0 result at Bahrain in the first leg, any win will do for the NZ national team to qualify for Sth Africa next year. I know us Aussies are always putting down the Kiwi's & vice versa. However, i really hope the Kiwi's make it through.

Good Luck New Zealand, i think most of Australia is on your side!

Best wishes for, (I think) our only NZ forum member Bobbi too!

Thanks Kris! cheers

Its a massive game for NZ football. Can't wait. My last uni exam is tomorrow (the day before this match) so its great timing. The Westpac Stadium in Wellington sold out within a few hours, so the atmosphere will be brilliant!

Come on the All Whites!

I would love to see New Zeland make it.

They will have to be ultra solid at the back though, but hopefully Smeltz and Killen do the job.

Bahrain will be confident, make no mistake about that. I'd still make them favourites.

However, I want to see New Zealand there; purely because they have a certain Chris Wood who I would like to see in the WC.

In saying that, I think both sides would be "whipping boys" in SA...

Thanks Kris. Yep exams went well enough! tongue

Time to enjoy the holidays and what better way to start than watching the Kiwi's try and qualify for the WC!?

Kick off is at 7:45pm tonight I think?

Sadly I've got work from 6pm but will try and get some time off if I can - although I doubt it, but I'll see.

I watched it from Australia, the game was broadcast live on Setanta.

Pure emotion from both sides, but moreso the Kiwis. The quality of this team isn't great and they'll just be looking to achieve respectable results next year but they fully deserve qualification. Herbert is a great coach. Kept NZ dsciplined and had them plying to their strengths. Set pieces and crosses were always going to test Bahrain. The image of Fallon celebrating will be to Kiwis what John Aloisi's penalty celebration is to Aussies.

Bahrain tried but not only was that penalty woeful, some guy made a foul throw in the dying minutes. Unacceptable stuff at this level. I'm Italian and we've aways been ahh ethically-questionable as are most continenal European and Latin American sides, but the timewasting practiced by the Arab nations is an embarrassment and I'm glad that it won't be disgracing the World Cup.

You'll get a good 270 minutes of blood, sweat and tears out of this Kiwi side in South Africa next year. I hope you get to meet the Azzurri. We wasted our chanec to avenge those rugby defeats in 2009, I want another chance.

I'm guessing England would be the opponentof choice for NZ fans? Australia will probably be in the same pot.

I saw the game on Eurosport and I have to say that New Zealand will be one of the weakest teams in the WC. Most of their players havent got much class and aren't even on a decent level. But I have to say the team was quite well organised and didn't give much chances to Bahrain to score. Bahrain seemed to have more skilful players and played a lot more beautiful but It's the goals that count and they didn't score.

Still I think they would have played better in the WC and maybe would have got a point or two and I have to say I don't think New Zealand will get even a point in next years WC but still congratulatulations to all the fans of this team and have a great time in Africa!

I am delighted for New Zealand but I have to agree with martinese, they lack the quality to do damage next year and Bahrain would probably have been better for the competitive environment of the WC but we will see.

As much as I am happy for Bobbi and all his compatriots, the qualification system in Asia/Oceania is a joke and needs to be addressed. I understand why Australia feel the need to be in the Asian groups and be given a test but since NZ have come on leaps and bounds of late, it really meant they had one tricky two-legged tie to qualify. I think FIFA should look at grouping Asia/Oceania together and having a bunch of group stages; then debates like this wouldn't be valid.

Anyway, happy the All Whites will be there and I hope we can get there and somehow nab them in our group tongue

Ah well, Nigeria against all odds have just made it to compensate for the NZ quality. Wrong topic i know.

Delighted for both NZ & Nigeria.

Everyone here is talking about how NZ are and lackluster side, no technical ability, wont even get a point in the group stages, be whipping boys etc....

NOTE: They already know that, they are aware of their teams giant flaws... BUT

They have qualified for the greatest sporting tournament on earth, no matter how easy people will say their qualifying run was, they are in south africa 2010. Qualification is the achievement, anything extra is a bonus.

When you come from a country like Italy, Germany, Brazil, Spain etc.. Qualification is not celebrated, because its a given that they will qualify. Its inconceivable that these teams should not qualify. But for NZ, its the opposite, its actually inconceivable that they will qualify. This win for NZ is on par with the moment Italy won the world cup in 2006. Its massive for them!

And thats all that matters. Not results, not goal difference, not technical abilty. They could cop 15 goals in the group stages for all they give a f@#k. Just the fact they are there is their victory.

Congratulations sheep shaggers! Play with pride no matter what the scenario in 2010!

Its true NZ are not the greatest side and will probably be given a thumping or two but the team will give it their best no doubt about that. NZ is the smallest nation to qualify for WC 2010 so just qualifying for South Africa is unbelievable - not forgetting the fact that football is hardly recognised and appreciated here unfortunately so that's a massive achievement alone.

I do agree that FIFA need to change the qualifying system for Oceania. NZ had to come through a group involving the likes of New Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu. No disrespect to those nations but they aren't exactly top class and its harsh that countries such as Croatia, Turkey and Sweden (or even one nation currently vying to qualify) won't be there due to a spot given to the Oceania region. But then again, its good seeing smaller countries with less of a football history being given the chance. For the world game to develop further, this is something which needs to take place.

In saying that I do believe NZ needs to start playing in the Asian qualifiers to develop and grow as a footballing nation. It'd be unlikely that the country would qualify given that we'd be playing against the likes of Japan, Korea and Australia but its a change which needs to happen in the near future and I hope FIFA see it the same way.

But I'm very happy and proud that NZ have qualified and I look forward to watching the boys give it their all next year!

cheers

So pleased to see that Rory Fallon scored the winner for New Zealand. My home team is Plymouth Argyle who Fallon currently plays for. It's an incredible story. He played for England at junior level (his father was English) so was unable to play for the Kiwi's as a professional. However Fifa changed the rules in June of this year. This allowed Fallon to play for the New Zealand, where he was born. He was happy just playing for New Zealand, just 3 apperances. So to score the winner to qualify New Zealand for the world cup is the stuff of dreams.
