NZ played a friendly match with Serbia today and won 1-0! cheers

I know its just a friendly but the performance from the Kiwi's was encouraging and very respectable, especially when the Serbs had several key players in the lineup (Vidic, Rukavina, Tosic, Kuzmanovic, Zigic, Pantelic), and later on introduced the likes of Kolarov, Kacar and Lazovic. Not to mention Killen and Brown (both key players) not featuring.

This was NZ's 'biggest' ever win, in terms of what FIFA seed the opponent was (ranked 15th).

Hoping for some good performances in South Africa in a few weeks time!

Lippi's final list:

Gianluigi Buffon
Federico Marchetti
Morgan De Sanctis

Defenders
Fabio Cannavaro
Gianluca Zambrotta
Giorgio Chiellini
Domenico Criscito
Christian Maggio
Mattia Cassani
Leonardo Bonucci

Midfielders
Gennaro Gattuso
Andrea Pirlo
Mauro Camoranesi
Daniele De Rossi
Angelo Palombo
Simone Pepe
Riccardo Montolivo
Claudio Marchisio

Strikers
Alberto Gilardino
Vincenzo Iaquinta
Antonio Di Natale
Giuseppe Rossi
Giampaolo Pazzini

I'm guessing "out with the old and in with the new" isn't really Lippi's motto. And still we see Pepe. ffs

At this rate you could make a really good team of players who aren't going to be fit...

I would start to worry if I was a captain at the moment... maybe the cotton wool in SA is of very low quality...

Ferdinand out, Drogba very dubious (I am guessing he will be risked with the most hi-tech cast imaginable).

The absence of Rio is a blessing in disguise for England in my opinion. As England captain he had to go and start but neither form or fitness stood in his favour.

Pirlo for Italy wouldn't be a huge loss either.

Problem without Rio is that both King and Terry prefer to play on the left of the 2 CB's making it less balanced. I suppose Carragher could play but I doubt the only RB reserve will be used there, at least in the main.

I agree about Pirlo, he has been relied on totally for passing and creating for too long, if he is out though then I don't see any sign of a plan B... although saying that Plan A would only take Italy so far.

Problem with Pirlo is they'll keep him in the squad even though he'll miss the whole group stage and then they'll rush him back (if they are still in the comp).

I'd just replace him with Cossu now while we still can and take a different approach.

Australian news said Ferdinand (IMO not that big of a loss) will be replaced by Dawson. Drogba has broken his arm but may play at some stage (hope he does, it would be a shame if he didn't). Pirlo will definitely miss the first match.

We'll see about that Ed

I didn't see the game, only highlights. Slovenia scored 2 goals directly from free kicks (well taken but Paston and the wall should have done better on both) and the other a tap in. NZ's was well worked, however the finish was very fortunate.

I'm not expecting NZ to top the group, in fact I doubt a win or point is even possible tongue but I am expecting a decent performance in every game.
