PostSubject: SA 2010 - The Azzurri   Wed Apr 28, 2010 3:55 pm

I think one of the biggest topics in the lead up to South Africa 2010 has been the Azzurri and the squad Lippi may or may not take to the WC.

Well, I know we have a dedicated topic for the WC but I thought it might be a fun idea to see who forum members would take to South Africa.

So, post your 23-man squad below and get the debate going. I'm still thinking up mine Very Happy

PostSubject: Re: SA 2010 - The Azzurri   Wed Apr 28, 2010 4:31 pm

I assume this is the side we would take if we were selecting it, cause I know Lippi is only going to disappoint and infuriate me.

Goalkeepers:

Buffon (how can you not)
Marchetti (reliable backup)
Sirigu (future no. 1)

Defenders:

Chiellini (best Italian defender)
Balzaretti (has been excellent at Palermo and is ready)
Zambrotta (experienced even if past it, has to go)
F. Cannavaro (idem)
P. Cannavaro (I feel he is ready and has had a better campaign than Bonera who is horrible and Gamberini who has been disappointing. I have question marks over Bocchetti's discipline. Ranocchia is injured)
Bonucci (will be a fixture come 2014)
Grosso (struggled with Juve but has always performed for Italy)
Cassani (like Balzaretti has been excellent for Palermo and with ageing full backs is ready to step up)

Midfielders:

Pirlo (he is Pirlo)
Marchisio (immense talent and a genuine one unlike his overrated teammate Giovinco)
De Rossi (romanista unfortunately but he is a pillar for gli azzurri)
Gattuso (yes, he's had a terrible time over the last season or two but no one else offers his experience and grinta. Won't be a starter though.)
Palombo (has stepped up well to int'l football)
Camoranesi (not his biggest fan but he will go)
Cossu (I really admire his abilities and feel he has something special to offer Italy that the others don't.)

Forwards:

Pazzini (a fantastic striker who links up well with a smaller creative seconda punta)
Gilardino (always a good option to have up front)
Floccari (not just Lazio bias, but he is now in the best five Italian forwards and offers unique attributes to the attack that the other four don't)
Miccoli (too bad he and Lippi have bad blood. Miccoli has all the talent of Cassano without the tantrums. Scores more goals too!)
Di Natale (I've always believed that if the capocannoniere is italian, he deserves to go and has clearly had a better campaign than a Quagliarella type)

***

That said you can bet we'll see all the disappointments, your Toni's, your Pepe's and God forbid Amauri.

If Pepe goes I will walk to Italy and punch Lippi myself. Same goes for Quagliarella.

Lippi will not cave into pressure. Meaning fat chance you'll see Cassano, or Di Natale for that matter.

And to the "God forbid" list: don't forget the rumors about titty offering his "services". Shoot me now.

Di Natale is a regular Sile.

I think Sile meant Miccoli, as due to Lippi and son's links to the corrupt world of football agents and GEA, Fabrizio will not play for Italy.

I left Di Natale out because in the Azzurri, he won't get the same privilege he gets at Udinese. He is lethal but much of that is because the play goes through him. I also think at his age, he will be spent by the latter stages if Italy can get there. Especially after a tough season.

Pazzini is too clinical to leave out. Gilardino's goal record in the past 2-3 years is enough to get him the nod. Iaquinta provides a threat anywhere in a forward line and is probably experienced enough and in good enough shape to just pip Floccari. Nobody can split a defense like Cassano and Miccoli can split defenses with his passing or goalscoring. For me, they pick themselves in an ideal world.

I meant to write Miccoli. Too late now.

Mostly I agree with what transfermarkt have listed.

http://transfermarkt.de/de/italien/startseite/nationalmannschaft_3376.html

with kicking out Legrottaglie, Bonera, Quag, and Boriello and taking P. Cannavaro, Grosso, Gilardino and either Miccoli or Cassano.

Lippi's prelim squad

http://www.goal.com/en/news/1863/world-cup-2010/2010/05/02/1905553/breaking-news-world-cup-2010-no-balotelli-cassano-or-miccoli

Goalkeepers: Buffon, Marchetti, De Sanctis, Sirigu

Defenders: Bocchetti, Bonucci, F. Cannavaro, Cassani, Chiellini, Criscito, Grosso, Legrottaglie, Maggio, Zambrotta

Midfielders: Camoranesi, Candreva, Cossu, Gattuso, Marchisio, Montolivo, Pepe, Palombo, Pirlo

Forwards: Borriello, Di Natale, Gilardino, Pazzini, Iaquinta, Quagliarella

wtf Borriello, Iaquinta and Pepe. Told y'all that no Cassano or Miccoli. On a side note I really like the progress Palombo is making, he's a real work horse.

squad is terrible, but it's Lippi, you would expect that from him, wouldn't you? We all knew that there was going to be no Cassano, Miccoli or Floccari. I'm actually suprised that Toni isn't in the squad Very Happy

That really looks a world class midfield - not. I can't see where the creativity and skill is going to come from, relying on Pirlo to unlock defences is foolish now and whatever Lippi sees in Pepe and Camoranesi is anyones guess.

The defence is no where near the level of 2006 - either untried or well past their sell by date.

The forwards may be good Serie A players but at international level you need something else. There is no one striker who guarantees goals.

Montolivo has had a terrible season, as have Gattuso, Pirlo, Grosso, Zambrotta and old boy Cannavaro - I bet you all except Montolivo start too.

I think this squad highlights the overall lack of top class, experienced Italian players at the moment...

This is why a player like Miccoli with fantasia is a must.

Lippi though has always let personal differences get the better of him.

With some of the younger lads we have, I think we can make a splash in 2014 provided someone new takes the top job after the finals.
