PostSubject: Zarate Announces Lazio Switch   Sun Jun 29, 2008 3:04 pm

Mauro Zarate has announced to the Argentinean media that he has agreed to join Lazio, and that the deal is set to be announced imminently.

The Al-Sadd striker, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Birmingham City, was also a target for Portsmouth. However, the player himself announced last night that the deal to take him to the Stadio Olimpico is already complete.

Al-Sadd are insisting on a high fee for their star turn, and with Lazio’s delicate finances, a complex agreement has been reportedly set in place.

Zarate would arrive at the club initially on loan for a fee of £2.4 million, with a three-year buy-out clause. Lazio would pay a further £4.4 million by June 2009 and another £6.7 in 2010. The subtotal of the deal would be in the region of £13 million.

Lazio club president Claudio Lotito insists that the contract has not been deposited as yet, and he will therefore not announce the transfer.

He told the Italian media: “I am accustomed to only announcing a signing after I have deposited the contract with the authorities and this has not happened yet. Therefore it is not true that we have already captured Zarate. We are working on three top class objectives and hope to land at least one.”

However, his announcement was at odds with what the player himself had to say to the media in his homeland.

Zarate said: “At last! I am happy. This is a dream come true.”

This morning, the Corriere dello Sport speculated that the deal had been agreed between Lazio and Al-Sadd, with only contracts to be signed.

According to the paper, Zarate will officially become a Biancoceleste on July 8.

Lotito said tonight that the transfere fee is 25 M USD not to mention that he praised the player by saying: he is better than Messi???

I almost saw all his videos on youtube, he is a great talent and great addition to our squad, finally we signed a player that can dribble our opponents with the exception of Pandev and is great in FK also, and undoubtly will improve our game!

There is alot of pressure on him and Rossi ATM, but let us hope he will meet the expectations we are building on him.

Welcome to the Nest

Hope he'll pull sth like this in the derby Twisted Evil

I just hope he lives up to our expectations.he has a dual nationality, argentinian and italian, which is perfect leaves us room to sign some non-EU player should such a case occur.
I like argentinians, still missing the days of Simeone and Veron Crying or Very sad
And Zarate has a nice ring to it,catchy,I can already hear the commentator "Zarate,ZARATEEEE,GOOOOOOLLLLL,GOOOLLL,ROMA ZERO LAZIIIOOO CINQUE!!!"

Well except him the only other 2 are Pandev and Kolarov are non-EU so we could go for a non-EU striker possibly, some other young argentinian prospect....

Actually you busted me,but I still have doubts about Juan,I'll believe it when I see it on transfermarkt.de

so far nothing

i thought the rules stated that we can onlly buy 1 non EU player from outside italy per season. if that is the case Carriwzzo is using it. We are waiting for fernandez to get his passport.

yes at last soebody posted this issue, I though that Tare and Kolarov are occuping the non EU seats. I heared before that Mr. Tare will get a european passport thanks to his german whife while Carrizo will take the empty seat that was lefted by Tare and if I am not worng Fernandez will not come unless he will get the european passport, please correct me if I am worng.

sorry for going off the topic

Look, each team can have no more than 3 non EU players in their team. At Lazio the three non EU players are Pandev, Kolarov and one of Ledesma or Tare.

Another key issue is that each team can register no more than 1 non EU player for each new season. Last year the non EU player registered by Lazio was Kolarov. Lotito decided to register Kolarov instead of Carrizo as a non EU player because he got guarantees that Carrizo is eligible to get an Italian passport and in that way be registered as a player from the EU so he doesn't occupy one of the non EU spots in the team.

You are correct about Tare. His wife has a German passport and he could apply for his passport too but that remains to be seen and it is yet unclear wether he will be given a new contract. Of course that if Lotito offers him a new contract he will ask Tare to apply for this passport, if he didn't apply already.

The thing with Pandev is that he has been living in Italy since he was very young (16 I think) and after 8 years he is eligible to apply for an Italian passport. Of course he will do that this year or next year because he intends to leave Lazio next summer and by having a EU passport he would become much more attractive for major European clubs because then he would not fill one of the 3 non EU places each team is granted.

Ledesma's wife is Italian I think and that means that he too could become an Italian citizen in the near future.

Carrizo's girlfriend is Argentinian but she holds an Italian passport so hipothetically speaking, if they get married some day and stay in Italy, he too could apply for an Italian passport.

And last, the Italian Football Federation is contemplating about allowing each club to register two non EU players for each new season. They have still not decided on this issue but a decision will probably be made shortly. If they decide to vote for this new rule it would allow Lazio to register Carrizo and Fernandez (both River Plate) as non EU players, although Fernandez has already put in his request for a Spanish passport. Lotito is waiting for either the new rule to be put in effect or for the player to get the passport because he has already agreed a fee with River Plate and personal terms with the player.

I hope this clears some of the mess.
