what a show from espana!!! though sort of like germany, their defence looked shakey at times and I'd like to see them tested by a better opponent. there were too many mix ups in the box that a better team may well have capitalized on. that's not the puyol i'm used to. they may need a stronger presence in the holding midfield if marcos senna doesn't become more decisive. still, they looked absolutely spectacular... though, didn't they make this same start in the last WC? oh well, really beautiful football and i hope they continue in this form.

Even though Spain won 4-1, Russia looked a lot better than the result might indicate. Their defending was just horrible!

Horrible performance by Russia, I must admit I expected pretty much. Football in slow motion, lazy defending... Hope they'll do better next time. Вперёд Россия! Very Happy

Greece made everything to irritate the destiny, hehe. They certainly deserved to lose but with far more devastating result. Twisted Evil

Nice wins for Spain and Sweden.

Spain players were just too quick for powerful Russian players.
It is difficult for tall defenders to mark smaller attacker such is David Villa.

Oh Lord...here we go. I knew the Italian press would have a field day after the horrific loss to the Dutch, but the players?
Come on...need to show a little bit more class than this. If we lose to Romania and crash out - Donadoni is history - if he's not already.
Sad thing is - if he doesn't WIN the Euro, he's history. Sad, but probably true. However, if he fails to advance out of the group stages,
I'm all for it. Now, w/ regards to the below...Not sure how much of this is "real," but I'd be willing to bet 50% of it is.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, a number of Italy players were so furious with Roberto Donadoni’s decisions in the defeat against Holland that they sent text messages to those left out of the squad slamming the Azzurri boss.

Donadoni has been absolutely crucified by the Italian press for his own personal performance both before and during the dismal 3-0 defeat to the Dutch in Berne on Monday night.

The Don has been blasted for starting the disaster-prone Marco Materazzi, as well as Massimo Ambrosini, while also for leaving Fabio Grosso and Daniele De Rossi on the bench. He has also been heavily criticised for waiting so late in the second half before introducing Alex Del Piero and Antonio Cassano, both of whom impressed during the few minutes they received.

The Gazzetta says that members of the Italian squad also blame Donadoni for the defeat, and a number sent text messages after the game to players not in the squad, criticising the coach.

"Physically we are fine, but we enter onto the field with fear," one World Champion wrote to another World Champion.

"We only know who plays a few hours before the game. We are treated like children.”

It is now being speculated who the two players were that were involved in this particular SMS. Some believe that the recipient could have been either Pippo Inzaghi or Massimo Oddo, who were both upset and angry at having been left out by Donadoni for Euro 2008

The first round of group stage is in the past. The most impressive team for me was Germany , a lot of potential and growth in their side.
Italy was defeated badly , but after all I think they are going to the next round. If they had chance to play again vs Dutch , i believe it would be different this time. But even if Italy didn't qualified , I am not worried about them , because there are strong players and the future is bright for the team.
As a whole the tournament started well , compared with previously years. I notice permanent process of growth in teams like Rumania , Russia , Turkey , Croatia and hopefully some of them would be able to make surprise in Euro 2008.
Tonight Czech Rep vs Portugal ..... time to see of what is capable my supported team against the big names , such as is Portugal doubtless.
