PostSubject: Asian WC-qualifiers   Fri Sep 05, 2008 10:55 pm

Here comes a topic on the Asian WC-qualifiers.

This time around Australia is qualifying in the Asian continental zone, which has obviously made the competition even harder than before. The first two teams of each group will go straight to the WC2010, while the two 3rd placed teams will play a home and away tie. The team that leaves as winners there will qualify against the winners of the Oceania qualifications and the winner in that play-off will also travel to South Africa.
The first round takes place tomorrow and the 10 teams that have made it here have already gone through one group stage.

Group 1
Team MP W D L GF GA Pts

Australia 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Japan 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Bahrain 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Uzbekistan 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Qatar 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Group 2
Team MP W D L GF GA Pts
Korea Republic 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Iran 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Saudi Arabia 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Korea DPR 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
United Arab Emirates 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

First round (06/09):

Group 1

Bahrain - Japan

Qatar - Uzbekistan

Group 2

Saudi Arabia - Iran

UAE - Korea DPR

The hottest game in the first round is most definitely between the arch-rivals and two of the Asian power-houses Saudia Arabia and Iran. The hate between these two teams runs deep and these games are usualluy filled with bookings, red cards and lots of psychological warfare before and during the game.

For those of you who follow any of the teams, please report on how things are going, how the team is playing etc.. I will update results and group standings after each round (hopefully).

To be honest, it's wide open, anyone can progress.

I tip Uzbekistan to make the WC.

They had a brilliant first round where they only lost to KSA in their last game, but then they were already through to next round and played away from home. I would not be to surprised if they made if, but they tend to lose focus in the bigger games - lack of experience...

Now all teams have played about 6 games

In group A, Australia and Japan will qualify… no doubt!
The other teams of this group are fighting for the third palce.

In group B, South Korea is in very good condition (with 11 points in 5 games)
Both North Korea and Saudi Arabia have 10 points in 6 games and Iran has just 6 points in 5 games.

North Korea has made everyoune surprised! I think they will become second in the group and will qualify straightly
And Iran and Saudi should fight for the third place

North Korea and Saudi have to play against each other and this can be useful for Iran…

Well, with the appointment of Mayeli Kohan, everything is over for Iran. We will lose to North Korea, we ,ost to Saudi and we will have no chance qualifying. Stupid federation.

Yes, Mayeli is a stupid coach!

but i believe that he is 10 times better than Ghalenoei!!

Cash, Did u see Esteghlal games in Asian champions league? it proved that Ghalenoei is not an international coach!

and about Ghotbi... he is stupid too!!
somedays ago when iranian federtion was looking for a coach, Ghotbi said:
" in Korea, everyone is afraid of me! " jocolor jocolor

i'm sure nobody even knows Ghotbi in Korea!!! he has been just an assistant coach in Korea .

I dont even know the name of assistants of Rossi in Lazio!!

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia ended in a draw, 0-0 in first leg of play-off.

the winner must play against Newzland. Newzland cant be tough for both Bahrain and Saudi.

I really hope Bahrain qualifies for world cup.

Japan, South Korea and Australia are a level above all asian teams.

2years ago, Iraq won asian nations cup. and some months ago, North Korea qualified for World Cup by eliminating Iran.

Saudi has always been present in world cup since World Cup 1994. but they have never get any good results there... i remember their 0-8 defeat against Germany in WC 2002.

so if Saudi qualifies for WC, i'm sure once again they cant do well.

But if bahrain qualifies, atleast it can bring a new spirit for football in Asia. (although Bahrain cant do wll in WC too!)

and Iran... our football is getting worse and worse every year! No

Australia had a good win over Oman. Went down 1-0 and with ten man in Muscat but came back strong with 2 goals through Bresciano and a sweet shot from Emerton with minutes to go. The Aussies are a very good team. Verbeek is doing a wonderful job. Hope to see them do well in South Africa! Wink

African Qualifiers

This is regarding the African qualifiers. Anyone keep a keen interest in the Egypt - Algeria match in Cairo? Meghni played the entire match. The rivalry between these 2 teams is immense and the game turned out to be a thriller!

Egypt needed to win by 2 goals to force a one match decider in Sudan in a few days time. If they won by more than 2 goals then they'd automatically qualify - if not, then Algeria would qualify. So basically as long as Algeria lost by no more than one goal (eg: 0-1, 1-2, etc.) then they'd be through.

Final score was Egypt - Algeria 2:0 with Meteb scoring the decisive goal in the 95th minute!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!!

This means there will be a one game decider on the 18th of November (I think?) to decide who goes to South Africa and sadly, who watches from home. It promises to be a great match. I'm really considering watching it ahead of some of the European qualifiers.

Nothing against either side - but I would love to see Meghni at the World Cup!

Bresciano crossed the ball, it was actually Wilkshire who tapped it in for the first goal Bobbi.

And although people keep praising Verbeek, i still think he is a too defensive manager. Always playing a lone striker up forward.

I have attached a picture of Pim Verbeek's Ace strategy below. For some reason, it worked and we went unbeaten while qualifying for WC2010.
