Anyone else fallowing the Rally this year? I'm not really a fan of motorsports in general but this year the Dakar really fascinated me. As you probably know, this year it's held in South America and the last stage is tomorrow. Up until now it has been the hardest ever.

If you're fallowing it, do you have any favorite, and what do you think about the race so far?

Maybe this thread isn't going to be the most popular, but it's worth trying... Wink

Well done De Villiers! cheers

Question: Why doesn't the rally end in Dakar anymore?

It is due to the political instability down in Africa. No other reason really. Guess it is more than enough to worry abot actually making it to Dakar, thugs, freedom fighers and other armed geezers is probably a bit more than the drivers can risk...

This year the race is from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso and then back to BA again.

One interesting note, i am not sure that it is 100% true, is that Osama Bin Ladin's son or brother or something offered a horse race across Northern Africa instead of the rally to make up for the "lost race" due to the instability (mainly people are afraid of Al Qaida or similar organsiations will target the race in one way or another).

Well done de Villiers and Coma that held on to their leads today, even though I think it's a pity Sainz had to withdraw. He really impressed this year.

Amazing also to see so much people and supporters on this last stage. Must be an amazing feeling for the participants to make it all the way and get welcomed by all those.

Last year the Dakar was suspended because of the political situation and some menaces.
This year has been a succees in Argentina-Chile.
Started in Buenos Aires the went to Patagonia, back to the nort till Mendozam then they crossed Los Andes mountains to come to Valparaíso, the first chilean port. After a day resting they cntinue to the north, till La Seren and the 2 days in the Atacama desert, to go back to Argentina.
The drivers, motorbike, cars and trucks said that was wonderful, but much dificult than in Africa,
We hope to have again the Dakar in 2010.
Here some pictures
The truck were a great attractive

The chilean policemen were also fans
