PostSubject: Under 21 European Championships   Tue Jun 16, 2009 5:46 pm

Isn't anyone interested in this tournament? Or have I missed a topic dedicated to it?

In my book, this tourney is more interesting than the Confed as there are lots of current, and coming, stars and the young lads play a very interesting football.

The tournament takes place in Sweden and 8 teams are divided in to 2 groups. Group A sees Sweden, Belarus, Italy and Serbia fighting for the two Semi-final spots, while Group B consists of England, Finland, Spain and Germany.

Yesterday England beat Finland, and took an early lead after Agbonlahor found Cattermole who gave England the lead. After 30 minutes Finland attacked and Michael Mancienne of Chelsea was left a step behind the Finnish striker Sadik and brought him down inside the box, resulting in a red card and a penalty that the captain Sparv converted, and 1-1 was the half time result.
The second half saw England playing safely with the ten men, and after a corner some ten minutes in James Millner found Micah Richards, who headed in 2-1. The rest of the game England pretty conviniently neutralized Finland and despite playing more than half the game with 10 men they came out victorious.
However, England might need to play with a completely new set of CBs, as Mancienne is out due to the red card, and Richards came off due to an injury...

In the second game of yesterday, Spain and Germany fought a 0-0 draw. Germany, with many interesting young players, was the better side and should have been up after the first half. In the second half the game lost a bit in speed and quality, but all through the game the players showed a great level of football. Germany tried to win the game more than the Spanish side, that looked pretty satisfied with shared points.
There are some very interesting players to watch in these two teams as well as in all other teams, and they have both been seen as potential winners of these championships. In my eyes, German players Özil and Marin looked very impressive despite failing to score, and Neuer (who had his debut in the German "A-team" the other week) was very stable in goal. Spain also has lots of quality with players like Krkic, Raul Garcia, Javi Garcia and Capel, while they surely miss Pique and Busquets who went to RSA to play Confed...

Today Italy will step in playing Serbia, and the Swedish team (with Marcus Berg, who has been linked to Lazio in Swedish press) face Belarus, with plenty of players from BATE Borisov that had a great run in this years CL...

More info will come (if anyone is interested Very Happy )

Very good tournement in prospect.

England looked dogey enough yesterday against Finland, i know they had 10 men for the majority.

Spain - Germany, although 0-0 was a decent game, Mesut Ozil was great.

Now all teams have entered the competition, and a great result for the hosts while Italy couldnt get through the Serbian defence.

Sweden went down 1-0 against Belarus - a classy shot from some 30 meters by Kislyak, but managed to turn things around before the final whistle. The man of the match was definetely Marcus Berg who scored three goals, while G.Svensson and one of the Elm-brothers got one each making the result 5-1.
One ineteresting aspect is that Sweden has managed to turn things around in four consecutive games now (the fourth being this first match in the Championships), first losing the first goal but managing to come back and end the show by getting a winner. This team is a strong one, even though Belarus is a team with a lower standard compared to other teams in this group, the Swedes showed and impressive game and the 15.000 spectators showed that the crowd will help the team to at least reach the semis.

Later this evening Italy played Serbia, and just like last night were we saw Spain and Germany draw, we today saw another goalless game. The first half went to Italy, with the trio of Giovinco-Aquafresca-Balotelli causing some dangers, while the second one saw an improved Serbia pushing for a goal and getting as close as a shot striking the post. In my opinion Manchester United's Zoran Tosic, Ajax's Sulejmani and Kacar (from Hertha Berlin) will be very interesting to follow in the next games...

Balotelli really gets on my nerves and I badly hate his disrespectful body language during the game. In my opinion, a player can be cocky and a bit of an asshole at times, and if the have the charm (like Ibrahimovic) but the way Balotelli acts is just disgusting. He sees himself as the best player ever, doesnt pass the ball and is constantly complaining (let it be on the ref or on his team mates). Now this boy has some skills, mad ones, but he needs to learn how to behave and how to control himself.

No games tomorrow, on Thursday we will watch Spain - England and Finland - Germany, and on Friday Belarus - Serbia followed by Italy - Sweden.

Sweden's group is sick. Italy, Serbia AND Sweden? Wow.

I haven't paid much heed to this (mainly because I can't watch the games) but it sounds like it could be a cracking little tournament.

Great to see Berg get a hat-trick. The guy is obviously intelligent to be a fan of our club, I just hope he also become a top player and makes a transfer someday.

Yeah Caxi, it is a great tournament with plenty of skills and an open end to end game being shown so far. The Swedish team hadan amazingly good performance yesterday, and it is very interesting to see how good they will be against Italy...

Any team that wants to make a move on Ber it has to be this summer, his price is steadily increasing and is already a bit too much I would say. He just scored his first in the senior team, and he is the star of the U21 team. He has had a good time in the Neteherlands and there are plenty of larger clubs that are considering him. He might be a risk since he hasnt performed in a top league yet, but I am sure he could develop into something.

Well, in the first half they had a few (not many though) shots against the Serbian goal. A few nice crosses as well, but no real danger and Serbia could have won it in the second, as I see it. And not only due to the nice shot that hit the post - Serbia had a great second half.

I have been posted lots about Berg recently, and it almost seems as if I know this guy in person or so, but the thing is that I like players that play for us and that actually like us, and I also think that he has great potential.

After his hat-trick against Belarus yesterday he was interviewed by media. One of the Swedish newspapers asked him about next season, and he said that they have been adviced to not say anything about next season and if they are stayong or leaving their current clubs. In any case, the reporter said that more than 80 European clubs are represented in the stands looking for potential transfers and that they should be impressed after his display, and Berg replied that he "hopes that Lazio is one of those 80 odd clubs".

This guy seems to have a Lazio-fetisch...just like me tongue

Spain - England will be great, Spain to edge it though. The Spanish midfield of Raul Garcia, Sisi and Granero should win over. Im not convinced Bojan can get the goals though, but a narrow Spanish victory could be on the cards.

Germany - Finland. I think Germany will win by 2 or 3, despite the great effort of Finland in the 1st game.

A wicked last group game between Sweden and Serbia has been going on for 45 minutes. Serbia needs a win to get through, but Sweden is up 3-1 after the first half. Also, Serbia is down to 10 men. Berg scored the first 2 goals for Sweden (one on penalty, that wasnt really a penalty), serbia struc one back through Gojko Kacar. Toivonen probably put an end to the dreams of getting through to the finals for Serbia when he scored Sweden's third, and shortly after the Serbs got one player sent off...

In the other game Italy is down 1-0 to Belarus.

From the other group, England and Germany went through last night...

Acquafresca scored twice. Italy won 2-1, should have won by way more, but i really do like Acqua's movement.
