PostSubject: Any Computer Whizz Out There???   Mon Jul 13, 2009 7:19 pm

I have encountered a strange problem with my old PC.

I haven't really used it in the past 2 years. The mouse broke and while I attached new ones to the computer, I could only ever get the computer to start up, and that was it. Now, however, I've managed to attach a mouse and via the keyboard only, I managed to install it. I can open folders but as soon as I try to open files or menus, the whole thing freezes and restarts automatically, telling me I didn't shut it down properly scratch

I know the thing is old and is soon to become scrap but there are a few things stored on it that I would like to get but I can't even get as far as viewing my files. Any ideas on how to extract the data or fix the computer? Or any theory as to what the problem might be? bom

PS. It's not worth paying someone to fix it, hence I am looking for a free solution. Thanks!

Dismantle the computer, take out the hard drive, connect it to your new computer, transfer data, toss the old trap.

Cheers. Still sounds like a decent amount of effort. Any quick fix?

Have you tried navigating around and backing up the files using just ur keyboard? It's possible.

Yeah, but whether I use keyboard or mouse, it only works up to a point. The interesting this is, the point is regular.

For example, once the desktop is loaded, I can click into "My Computer" and everything works fine but as soon as I try to access my "C" drive, it doesn't respond and eventually, after several minutes, it just restarts.

Well I guess it's a decent amount of effort for someone who cooks pasta out of a satchel tongue

Only a couple of general ideas - Can you navigate to Accessories on the start menu then try a disc clean up and a defrag? Also a virus check may be stating the obvious but if you can run it then do so.
The other way may be to open say your music player, go as if you are going to open a file, navigate to the folder you want in there, copy the music file you need and then paste it straight on to a memory stick in a USB port. Obviously this would be the same if you wanted pictures from a photo editing software or text files from Word etc. that way you wouldn't open the folders using windows directly but the programs assosciated with the files...

I've made a breakthrough.

The last tie I tried to run ScanDisk, it refused to run it completely because I had too many background tasks (effectively). I managed to get rid of all the background tasks but then this new problem kicked in.

I managed to navigate it on to Safe Mode and access ScanDisk. I tried running the Defragmenter but it can't run if there's errors and it's reporting errors, so I think I'm making progress.

Hopefully I'll get somewhere. Thanks guys for all the help, all the little snippets of information has helped me to see the bigger picture. sunny
