the man u game is really cancelled...

that football event was not really important at all compare to this tragic event.... but the cancellation is symbolizing that the trust for security and safety in Indonesia decreased again following this evil event...

we've been trying hard to resurrect from monetary crisis, riots, bali bombing and global crisis for years.... and now we've been pushed back again to the bottom... No

Asian Debate: Have The Jakarta Bombings Ended Indonesia's 2022 World Cup Dream?
Asia Editor John Duerden ponders what last Friday's terrorist acts in Jakarta mean for Indonesian dreams of hosting the 2022 World Cup...

20 Jul 2009 02:52:11

The bombings in Indonesia on Friday didnít just kill a number of innocent people and didnít just mean that Manchester United cancelled their appearance in the country, they have also put the nationís dreams of hosting the 2022 World Cup in jeopardy.

Spending, on-and-off, three weeks in Jakarta for the Asian Cup in 2007, security was tight at the big hotels, especially the Marriot, the site of a number of press conferences but apart from the x-ray machines and armed guards, there was never a feeling of danger or menace hanging in the humid July air.

Hanging around the stadium in those days, the only thing in the air was the smell of street vendors frying Mie Goreng on their giant woks.

Jakarta was a pleasant place to spend time working and watching football and meeting some of the friendliest people on earth. As well as the innocent loss of life, it is sad indeed that Indonesia, a great country to visit, has once again been tarred with the terrorist brush. Such strokes tend to stain.

70,000 plus fans in Indonesia are not going to be able to see Manchester United in action on their shores. The Gelora Bung Karno Stadium is one of the biggest in the world and produces one of the best atmospheres you will ever experience. The combination of the passion from the teeraces and the spicily sweet evening air is one that even Unitedís stars would have remembered for a long time to come.

In recent years big European clubs had started to visit the fourth-most populous nation on the planet. Bayern Munich and Roma were recent examples but Manchester United are, and not only literally, in a different league. No blame at all should be attached to the English club for cancelling the date. It was impossible for them to make any other decision for a pre-season friendly.

What is also sad is that this bombing basically puts Indonesia out of the race for the 2022 World Cup. The nation was a dark horse to start with, competing against the likes of England, USA, Spain-Portugal, Australia, Japan and South Korea, but now that horse has just been shot in the leg.

With all the talk over security in South Africa, another country I just spent three weeks in without incident Ė the biggest danger is the size of some of the portions of ribs in ĎSpurí - there is little chance that, in December 2010 when the decisions for both 2018 and 2022 are made, FIFA are going to award the competition to a surprise package that has security issues.

It makes it much worse that the bombings come just prior to the visit of a prestigious foreign team, surely no coincidence, and targeted prestigious international hotels. Other potential World Cup hosts have suffered from terrorism in recent years but not the kind that targets foreigners and foreign interests.

Indonesia was an outsider and needed strong arguments to persuade the world and FIFA that it could host the World Cup as well as, or better than anyone else. What these terrorists have done is to foster fears, rational or not, of what may happen if 31 foreign teams, thousands of journalists and hundreds of thousands of foreign fans were to descend on the archipelago in 2022. No matter how good a job Indonesia would do with security 13 years hence, the fear is now present.

But while it would have been a long shot, at least Indonesia would have been in the race and battling away.

At least there would have been a chance for fans and non-fans alike to start dreaming of what may happen in December 2010, it would have been an exciting ride and would have been something positive for the nationís oft-divided football fraternity to unite around.

Now that dream is in smouldering ruins, blown apart by cowardly terrorist acts.
